What is Sevista 60 mg?

  • Sevista is a prescription tablet containing 60 mg of ormeloxifene.

  • Ormeloxifene is also known by its older name, centchroman.

  • It is a selective oestrogen receptor modulator, or SERM.

  • It is non-hormonal and non-steroidal.

  • It was discovered at the Central Drug Research Institute in Lucknow.

  • It is manufactured under this brand by Torrent Pharmaceuticals.

  • Torrent markets Sevista to treat dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

  • That means heavy or irregular periods with no structural cause.

  • The same molecule is also used as a weekly contraceptive.

  • For contraception, the standard strength is Sevista 30 mg, not 60 mg.

  • It is not raloxifene, an osteoporosis drug with a similar name.

  • It is approved essentially only in India.

  • It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

  • Use Sevista only for the purpose your doctor prescribed.

How Sevista Works (Mechanism of Action)

The action happens in five simple steps:

  • Oestrogen stimulates the lining of the womb to thicken.

  • An overly thick lining can bleed heavily or irregularly.

  • Ormeloxifene blocks oestrogen action in the womb lining.

  • The lining therefore builds up less than before.

  • Bleeding becomes lighter and more regular over time.

  • A study treated women with 60 mg twice weekly for three months.

  • It then continued at once weekly for a further three months.

  • Haemoglobin rose significantly over the treatment period.

  • Womb lining thickness fell significantly over the same period.

  • Other causes of bleeding had been ruled out beforehand.

  • Ormeloxifene stays in the body for a long time.

  • That allows twice-weekly and then weekly dosing.

  • The weekly schedule is simpler than a daily tablet.

Dosage Guide

Your doctor sets the schedule. It is not a daily tablet.

How to read this table:

  • Your doctor’s written schedule is the authority, not this page.

  • The bleeding regimen shown comes from a published clinical study.

  • Your doctor may use a different duration.

  • Never take it daily unless specifically told to.

  • Do not assume 60 mg gives better contraception than 30 mg.

How to Take Sevista

  • Confirm the purpose of your prescription with your doctor.

  • Make sure other causes of your bleeding have been checked.

  • Choose two evenly spaced days each week for the first phase.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with water on those days.

  • Mark the days on a calendar or phone reminder.

  • Continue twice weekly for as long as your doctor directs.

  • Then move to once weekly on a fixed day.

  • Keep a record of your bleeding pattern.

  • Attend any follow-up blood test or scan arranged.

  • A weekly schedule is easy to forget, so set a reminder.

  • Expect your periods to change, including a possible delay.

  • Take a pregnancy test if a period is very late.

  • Do not rely on this tablet for contraception without advice.

  • Report bleeding that becomes heavier or more frequent.

Precautions

Do Not Use Sevista If You:

  • Are pregnant or might be pregnant.

  • Are allergic to ormeloxifene or any tablet ingredient.

  • Have abnormal bleeding whose cause has not been investigated.

  • No regulatory label was available to verify a complete list.

  • The pack insert supplied with the tablets is the authority.

  • Your doctor may also prescribe iron supplements.

  • Limit alcohol, which can affect bleeding and the liver.

Tell your doctor before combining Sevista with:

  • Hormonal contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy.

  • Other medicines for heavy menstrual bleeding.

  • Other oestrogen receptor modulators such as tamoxifen.

  • Another ormeloxifene product, including a contraceptive one.

  • Two ormeloxifene products together would stack the dose.

  • Hormone treatments may work against its effect on the womb.

  • Blood thinners can increase menstrual bleeding.

  • Herbal products may contain undeclared hormonal ingredients.

Seek same-day medical advice if you have:

  • Bleeding that soaks a pad or tampon every hour.
