What is Clenbuterol?

  • Clenbuterol is a beta-2 adrenergic agonist.

  • That is the same class as asthma reliever inhalers.

  • It opens narrowed airways in the lungs.

  • Some countries approve it for asthma and COPD.

  • It is taken as a tablet rather than inhaled.

  • A poison centre states it is not FDA-approved for humans.

  • In the United States it is available only for livestock.

  • A medical reference says it is not an ingredient

  • of any therapeutic drug approved by that regulator.

  • Giving it to food animals is banned there.

  • It is not registered with the Australian regulator.

How Clenbuterol Works

The intended action has three steps:

  • Beta-2 receptors sit on the muscle around the airways.

  • Clenbuterol stimulates those receptors.

  • The muscle relaxes and the airway opens.

  • Beta receptors are present throughout the body.

  • Stimulating them raises heart rate and metabolic rate.

  • That is the basis of the fat-loss claim.

  • It is also the basis of the cardiac harm.

  • The two cannot be separated.

The half-life problem:

  • One export listing gives a half-life of 36 to 48 hours.

  • A commercial source notes long-lasting effects as a result.

  • It adds that this increases cumulative toxicity risk.

  • Repeated daily doses build up in the body.

  • That is why toxic effects can last beyond a day.

Reported Harms

From two published poisons centre datasets:

Effect ReportedSourceWhat It InvolvesSignificance
Fast heart rateBoth studiesRacing or pounding heartThe commonest finding
TremorBoth studiesShaking, often of the handsVery frequently reported
Gastrointestinal upsetThe Australian studyNausea, vomiting, diarrhoeaSecond commonest finding
Low blood potassiumThe case seriesWeakness, cramps, rhythm riskNeeded potassium replacement
High blood sugarThe case seriesRaised glucoseA metabolic effect
Widened pulse pressureThe case seriesAn abnormal blood pressure gapA circulatory effect

Raised troponinThe case seriesA blood marker of heart injuryEvidence of myocardial injury
Raised creatine kinaseThe case seriesA marker of muscle damageReported alongside troponin
Chest pain and palpitationsThe case seriesPain and awareness of the heartPrompted hospital attendance
Myocardial ischaemiaCase reports citedReduced blood flow to the heartIn otherwise healthy people
Cardiac arrestThe Australian studyThe heart stoppingOne case, in a man aged 21
SeizuresThe poison centre articleFitsListed among toxic effects
Collapse, coma and deathAn export listingIn severe overdoseStated by a manufacturer
  • The case series lists activated charcoal and benzodiazepines.

  • It lists beta-blockers to counter the cardiac effects.

  • It lists potassium replacement and intravenous fluids.

  • Clenbuterol HCL 40mcg effects persisted for more than 24 hours.

  • Two of those patients had evidence of heart muscle injury.

  • They did not present as stereotypical drug users.

  • They presented as healthy, athletic, low-risk people.

Why This Page Gives No Fat-Loss Dosing

  • Searches for this molecule return escalation schedules.

  • Those schedules climb far above any medical dose.

  • They describe cycling periods on and off the drug.

  • Reproducing them would be a recipe for the harms above.

  • This document therefore does not repeat them.

  • A journal article says tablets have been used as a bronchodilator.

  • It gives Predniheal 5 Mg to 40 micrograms daily for that purpose.

  • One Indian export listing gives 20 to 40 micrograms twice daily.

  • Circulating fitness schedules go well above both figures.

  • The drug’s long half-life makes that escalation more dangerous.

The Sport and Legal Position

  • Clenbuterol is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

  • It is also banned by the International Olympic Committee.

  • An athlete testing positive faces disqualification.

  • Suspension from the sport may follow.

  • The drug has been given illegally to livestock.

  • That has caused contamination of meat in some regions.

  • Acute poisoning from contaminated food has been reported.

  • A 2025 review notes accidental exposure through food.

  • A medical reference records a death in 2021.

  • A Mexican fitness influencer suffered cardiac arrest.

  • It happened during anaesthesia for a cosmetic procedure.

An Indian Export Listing Worth Noting

  • An Indian exporter lists clenbuterol at 25, 40 and 60 micrograms.

  • It files the product under the category hormones.

  • Its stated indication is not respiratory at all.

  • Increasing the rate of protein synthesis in muscle tissue.

  • Increasing the protein to fat ratio in humans.

  • That is an anabolic claim, not an asthma indication.

  • No regulator identified here has approved that use.

  • The same listing describes anabolic and anti-catabolic effects.

Its own overdose section says:

  • Overdose may cause finger tremor and significant sweating.

  • It may cause headache and a fast heart rate.

  • Extreme and severe cases have presented with collapse.

  • They have presented with seizures, coma and death.

  • That is the manufacturer’s own stated risk.

Where Promotional Content for This Drug Sits

A pattern found repeatedly during this research:

  • Detailed dosing guides appear on institutional websites.

  • Several sit on subdomains of universities.

  • One sits on a government tourism subdomain.

  • One sits on a jobs website.

  • Those pages appear to be injected rather than official.

  • They promote purchase links alongside dosing schedules.

Why that matters to a legitimate retailer:

  • It shows where demand for this molecule is being generated.

  • It is a market built on unapproved use.

  • A licensed pharmacy competing there takes on that association.

  • None of that content was used for this document.

If You Have a Legitimate Respiratory Supply Need

  • Clenbuterol is approved for asthma in some countries only.

  • Your range already carries approved respiratory medicines.

  • Those include salbutamol, levosalbutamol and inhaled steroids.

  • Those have full labels, established doses and known safety.

  • Inhaled relievers deliver the drug to the lungs directly.

  • A tablet exposes the whole body, including the heart.

  • Guideline bodies prefer inhaled relievers for that reason.

  • There is no respiratory gap that clenbuterol alone fills.
