You may have seen the name online and wonder what Kamagra is. Kamagra, Super Kamagra and Kamagra Oral Jelly are unlicensed products marketed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and, in one case, for premature ejaculation (PE).
The drugs they claim to contain are genuine medicinal products. However, the products themselves are unlicensed, and their contents are not guaranteed. This guide explains what each of these products claims to be, how they compare to genuine medicinal products, and their safety. Safer routes to care are included.
What Is Kamagra?
Kamagra is a brand of ED tablets, claiming to be made with sildenafil citrate, the main ingredient in Viagra.

Kamagra has been associated with Ajanta Pharma, based in Mumbai, India; however, the unlicensed products sold online may not be subject to the same quality controls as licensed medicines. Kamagra 50 and Kamagra 100 sildenafil tablets refer to product specifications and are not a recommendation for use.
The main difference is that Sildenafil is a legitimate drug and licensed as a prescription-only medicine in various brands like Viagra.
Kamagra is not licensed in the UK, USA or EU. Just sharing a similar ingredient name does not make the two the same, so is Kamagra the same as viagra?
No.
How Sildenafil works
Sildenafil is a drug that blocks the enzyme PDE5[1]. Sexual stimulation releases nitric oxide. Nitric oxide raises the level of another molecule called cGMP.
Sildenafil blocks the enzyme PDE5, which breaks cGMP down. By blocking this enzyme, the effect of cGMP is prolonged, and blood flow to the penis is increased. Sildenafil doesn’t work without sexual stimulation.
There is a critical warning with Sildenafil and other drugs. Using Sildenafil with other drugs like nitrate medicines or “poppers” containing amyl nitrite can lead to a dangerous, life-threatening low blood pressure[2]. People taking nitrate medicines or using poppers containing amyl nitrite should not take sildenafil.
The Key Distinction
Because Kamagra products are unlicensed, their contents, dose and quality cannot be reliably assured. It is therefore prudent to consider the drug and the product as two different things.
What Is Kamagra Oral Jelly?
Kamagra Oral Jelly is marketed as containing sildenafil, the same active ingredient found in Viagra, in a flavoured gel, in single-use packets, labelled 100 mg.

Vendors state oral jelly is easier to swallow and has a quicker onset of action than the tablet. The claimed quicker onset has not been reliably established for this unlicensed product and should not be treated as a verified benefit.
The product is unlicensed, and therefore the amount of sildenafil in a pack and its rate of absorption cannot be reliably verified.
What Is Super Kamagra?
What Kamagra is used for depends on the version. Standard Kamagra is marketed for ED. Super Kamagra is a combination product that claims to contain Sildenafil (for ED) and dapoxetine (for PE) at 100 mg and 60 mg, respectively.
Super Kamagra is marketed for men who have been diagnosed with both PE and ED.
Licensed dapoxetine information cautions that it should not be combined with PDE5 inhibitors because of the risk of low blood pressure.

What is dapoxetine?
Dapoxetine is a medicine used to treat premature ejaculation. It increases serotonin activity and helps delay ejaculation.
Unlike many SSRIs used on a daily basis, dapoxetine is designed for use when needed. Dapoxetine should be used only as directed by a healthcare professional and according to the licensed product instructions.
Regulatory status of dapoxetine
There are important considerations regarding dapoxetine. A European Commission decision following an EMA referral on 20 January 2012 occurred after some national approvals in 2009. NICE’s evidence summary states that dapoxetine (Priligy) was launched in the UK in November 2013 for men aged 18 to 64[3]. This is historical information.
We are unsure of its current marketing authorisation status in the UK, so please check the MHRA products database before relying on this. In the USA, Kamagra is not an approved medicine, and dapoxetine has not been approved by the FDA for the treatment of premature ejaculation.
Who Super Kamagra targets
Dapoxetine is licensed to treat PE and requires prescriber oversight. Because Super Kamagra is an unlicensed product, it is not supplied through the standard prescribing and safety-monitoring process used for licensed medicines.
How Do They Differ?
Kamagra vs Super Kamagra vs Kamagra Oral Jelly
| Product | Active ingredient(s) claimed | Form | Target condition | Licensed equivalent | Key cautions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kamagra | Sildenafil (50/100 mg claimed) | Tablet | ED | Sildenafil / Viagra | Unlicensed; nitrate interaction; uncertain dose and quality |
| Kamagra Oral Jelly | Sildenafil (100 mg claimed) | Gel sachet | ED | Sildenafil / Viagra | Unlicensed; “faster onset” unverified; nitrate interaction |
| Super Kamagra | Sildenafil + dapoxetine (100 + 60 mg claimed) | Tablet | ED + PE | Sildenafil + dapoxetine (Priligy) | Unlicensed; nitrate interaction; SSRI cautions; needs prescriber oversight |
Are Kamagra Products Legal? Regulatory Status
Is Kamagra legal?
There is no approval for Kamagra by the FDA, MHRA or EMA. Sildenafil is approved for use in licensed ED products, but not the Kamagra brand.
Their sale and supply are not permitted through the authorised medicine supply systems in these regions. Sildenafil is prescription-only in these markets, while unlicensed Kamagra products are commonly marketed through unauthorised online and grey-market channels.
The issue is significant. The MHRA stated that in the UK alone, during the period 2021 to 2025, about 19.5 million units[4] of unlicensed ED products were seized, many of which contained no active ingredient, wrong doses, or hidden drugs and ingredients of concern.

Earlier MHRA data states that erectile dysfunction (ED) affects 21% of UK men and 44% of men aged 40 years and over, and of these, 53% did not seek medical attention[5].
Many men seek solutions for ED from internet sources out of embarrassment, and there is no shame in this. If you want to maintain your privacy and get treatment from a legal source, there are numerous authorised pharmacies to help you.
In the US, the FDA’s work on tainted products has shown that there are more than 400 sexual enhancement products, of which the majority of the adulterants are PDE5 inhibitors. So, is Kamagra FDA-approved? No. Sildenafil is approved for licensed products, but the Kamagra brand is not.
Safety Concerns & Counterfeit Risks
The main concern with Kamagra is the uncertainty surrounding the unlicensed product, in addition to the known risks of sildenafil.
Licensed medicines are subject to established quality-control requirements, including controls for identity, strength and purity. With unlicensed products, no one knows for sure what is in them.
This concern is supported by peer-reviewed literature showing that counterfeit PDE5 inhibitors can contain amounts that differ substantially from the labelled dose.
Talcum Powder, commercial paint and printer ink were reported as contaminants. Only 10.1% of the samples fell in the range of 10% of the labelled dose strength[6].
The same review estimated that 2.5 million men in Europe[7] were exposed to illicit Sildenafil and that 44-90% of medicines sold over the internet are counterfeit.
This is why regulators do not recommend the use of unlicensed products. For further information, please read our report on Counterfeit Medicines.
Side Effects & Contraindications of the Active Drugs
Do not take Sildenafil with nitrates or poppers. The NHS states Sildenafil is not usually prescribed with nitrates, and that taking poppers (amyl nitrite) with Sildenafil can have a dangerous effect on your heart.

Side effects include, but are not limited to: headaches, dizziness, blocked nose, stomach ache, nausea, anxiety, and blurred vision.
More serious (and rare) side effects include, but are not limited to: painful erections that will not go away (priapism) lasting longer than 4 hours, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeats, and heart attacks.
Seek urgent medical attention for serious side effects such as fainting, severe cardiovascular symptoms, or an erection lasting more than four hours. Products like Kamagra (and other unlicensed medicines) have no regulations to monitor the above effects.
Dapoxetine side effects & SSRI cautions
Some of the common side effects of using dapoxetine include nausea, headache, dizziness, and insomnia.
Dapoxetine is an SSRI designed for on-demand use, and its use requires consideration of potential interactions, cardiovascular risks and other contraindications. Licensed product information advises against combining dapoxetine with PDE5 inhibitors.
An unlicensed combination product such as Super Kamagra is not subject to the same standard prescribing and safety screening as licensed medicines.
Why ED and PE Should Be Medically Evaluated
ED can progress beyond the bedroom. According to the Mayo Clinic[8], due to the relative size of the penile arteries, symptoms of ED may occur years prior to the symptoms of vascular disease of the heart.
Regular checkups can help identify conditions you may be unaware of. According to the American Urological Association (AUA) guideline, oral PDE5 inhibitors are among the recommended treatment options for erectile dysfunction.
However, PE also has treatable causes, such as behavioural techniques and the use of topical anaesthetics, which should be selected in consultation with your healthcare professional. See our ED and heart disease and when to see a doctor for ED pages for more information.
You are not alone. Stricter definitions resulted in a lower estimated rate of ED. PE has been said to be the most prevalent male sexual dysfunction and is approximately 30% worldwide[9]. Stricter definitions reported lower rates as well.
Safer, Licensed Alternatives
The ‘safer’ option starts with a diagnosis. Licensed Kamagra alternatives for ED include: Sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil and avanafil.
For PE, the options include behavioural therapies and dapoxetine. All of these are available only on prescription after a health assessment by a doctor or registered pharmacist. Find out more in our guides on Sildenafil and Viagra, tadalafil (Cialis) and PE treatments.
| Attribute | Kamagra-brand products | Licensed prescribed medicines |
|---|---|---|
| Approval | Not approved; illegal to sell in US/UK/EU | Approved; supplied via registered pharmacies |
| Dose certainty | Unknown; counterfeit PDE5 inhibitors tested 0% to >200% of label | Verified and consistent |
| Quality testing | None; contaminants found | Batch-tested to Good Manufacturing Practice |
| Safety screening | None; no nitrate or heart check | Prescriber screens history and interactions |
| Overall | Avoid | Recommended route |
How Common Are ED and PE?
There are many men in the same situation as you. For example, the Massachusetts Male Ageing Study found that 52% of 1,709 men aged 40 to 70 had complete or partial ED.
Earlier projections estimated that the global number of men with ED could reach approximately 322 million by 2025. Data for these studies were collected in 1987 to 1989.
According to a review published in 2019, male premature ejaculation occurs worldwide at a rate of about 30%[9]. The review states that the absence of a unified definition leads to variability in estimates of the prevalence.
Conclusion
If you are considering using Kamagra or have already used it, speak confidentially with a doctor or pharmacist about your symptoms and treatment options. Be completely honest and tell them about all medicines, supplements and other products you are taking.
In the UK, use a pharmacy registered with the appropriate regulatory authority. If you are unsure about a product, report it to the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
In the US, you can report it to the FDA MedWatch Program. Seek urgent help for an erection lasting over four hours or sudden vision or hearing loss.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1:- Is Kamagra the same as Viagra?
Ans:- No. Viagra is a licensed, quality-controlled medicine, whereas Kamagra is an unlicensed product whose contents and strength cannot be reliably verified.
Q2:- What is Super Kamagra used for?
Ans:- It is a combination of products unlicensed for use in men with ED and PE. Super Kamagra contains Sildenafil and dapoxetine. Individual products containing these ingredients are licensed elsewhere, but this combination is not.
Q3:- What is the difference between Kamagra and Kamagra Oral Jelly?
Ans:- Both products are marketed as containing sildenafil. Kamagra is a tablet, while Kamagra Oral Jelly is a flavoured gel that claims to act faster.Neither product is authorised as a licensed medicine by the relevant regulatory authorities in these markets.
Q4:- Is Kamagra legal?
Ans:- No. Kamagra products are not authorised medicines in these markets. Purchasing them from unauthorised online sellers bypasses the protections provided by regulated medicine supply channels. Licensed sildenafil can be obtained legally through authorised healthcare and pharmacy channels where it is prescribed appropriately; Kamagra is not an authorised equivalent.
Q5:- Is Kamagra Safe?
Ans:- Because Kamagra is unlicensed, its contents and strength cannot be reliably verified. It may also carry the known risks of sildenafil, including serious interactions with nitrates.
Q6:- Is Kamagra FDA or MHRA Approved?
Ans:- No. Kamagra is not approved by the FDA, MHRA or EMA. Sildenafil is approved in licensed ED medicines, but Kamagra is not an authorised brand.
Q7:- What is dapoxetine?
Ans:- Dapoxetine is an SSRI used on demand for premature ejaculation. Its regulatory status varies by country, so local prescribing information should be checked.
Q8:- What are the side effects of Kamagra?
Ans:- Kamagra may cause side effects associated with sildenafil, but because the product is unlicensed, its contents and strength cannot be reliably verified. There are also unpredictable risks of using unlicensed products since they may also contain unknown contaminants.
Q9:- Can I buy Kamagra legally?
Ans:- Speak with a doctor or licensed pharmacy about approved treatment options for ED.
Q10:- What are safer alternatives to Kamagra?
Ans:- Treatment for premature ejaculation includes behavioural changes as well as (where licensed) dapoxetine. Medication options can be prescribed where appropriate after an assessment of your health and any medicines you are taking, including medicines containing nitrates.
Q11:- Why does ED treatment need a prescription check?
Ans:- ED can be a symptom of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions that can also increase the risk of serious adverse effects when using Sildenafil. In licensed products, the prescriber performs this risk assessment, which is not the case for unlicensed products.
