What is Dulane DR?

  • Dulane DR is a prescription capsule containing duloxetine.

  • Duloxetine is an antidepressant of the SNRI class.

  • SNRI stands for serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor.

  • DR stands for delayed release, describing the capsule coating.

  • It is supplied in 60 mg, Dulane 30 mg and Dulane 20 mg strengths.

  • The originator brand of duloxetine is Cymbalta.

  • It treats major depressive disorder in adults.

  • It treats generalised anxiety disorder.

  • It treats nerve pain caused by diabetes.

  • It treats long-term musculoskeletal pain in some markets.

  • It is used for fibromyalgia in some markets.

  • The same capsule is used for both mood and pain conditions.

  • It is not a painkiller in the ordinary sense.

  • It is not a sedative and not a sleeping tablet.

  • It does not work immediately and takes weeks to help.

  • Use Dulane M 20 mg only under a doctor’s ongoing supervision

How Dulane DR Works (Mechanism of Action)

The action happens in five simple steps:

  • Nerve cells communicate using chemical messengers across small gaps.

  • Two of those messengers are serotonin and noradrenaline.

  • After release, nerve cells normally reabsorb them again.

  • Duloxetine blocks the transporters that carry out that reabsorption.

  • Both messengers therefore remain active in the gap for longer.

What that means for mood and for pain:

  • Higher serotonin and noradrenaline activity can lift mood over weeks.

  • The same messengers also dampen pain signals travelling to the brain.

  • That is why one medicine treats both depression and nerve pain.

  • Benefit builds gradually rather than appearing after one capsule.

  • Several weeks may pass before the full effect is clear.

  • The capsule has an enteric coating that resists stomach acid.

  • It only dissolves further down, where acidity is lower.

  • In very acidic conditions unprotected duloxetine breaks down.

  • It can then form a substance called naphthol.

  • Crushing or opening the capsule destroys that protection.

  • It also releases the whole dose at once, raising side effects.

  • Swallow every capsule whole, without exception.

Dosage Guide

Your prescriber sets the dose and reviews it over time.

SituationLabelled DoseTimingKey Note
Depression, adult starting dose40 mg daily as 20 mg twice dailyWith or without food60 mg daily is an alternative start

Stopping treatmentReduce the dose graduallyOver weeks, as directedNever stop suddenly
Missed doseTake the next dose as scheduledDo not double upNever take two doses together

How to read this table:

  • Doses differ by condition, so your prescription is the authority.

  • Most indications settle at 60 mg once daily.

  • Starting lower for a week helps the body adjust.

  • Raising the dose above 60 mg rarely adds benefit.

  • It does reliably add side effects.

  • Never change the strength or form without checking first.

  • Take a missed dose as soon as you remember that day.

  • Skip it entirely if the next dose is near.

  • Never take two capsules at the same time.

  • Overdose can cause serotonin syndrome and seizures.

  • It can also cause fainting, vomiting and a fast heartbeat.

  • Seek emergency medical help immediately after any overdose.

  • Take the pack with you so the strength can be checked.

How to Take Dulane DR

  • Take the dose exactly as your doctor has prescribed it.

  • Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water.

  • Never crush, chew or open the capsule.

  • Never sprinkle the contents onto food or into a drink.

  • Take it with or without food, as you prefer.

  • Taking it with food may reduce nausea.

  • Keep to the same time each day.

  • Keep taking it daily even before you feel any benefit.

  • Allow several weeks before judging whether it is working.

  • Read the Medication Guide supplied with each prescription.

  • Attend every review appointment your doctor arranges.

  • Never stop the capsules suddenly on your own.

  • Ask your doctor to plan any reduction gradually.

Practical usage tips:

  • Set a daily alarm so doses are not missed.

  • Nausea is common early on and usually eases.

  • Ask someone close to you to mention any change in your mood.

  • Tell your doctor promptly about agitation or restlessness.

  • Rise slowly from sitting or lying to avoid dizziness.

  • Have your blood pressure checked during treatment.

  • Avoid alcohol, which adds to drowsiness and liver strain.

  • Tell any new prescriber that you take an SNRI.

A note on mood and the boxed warning:

  • Antidepressants raised suicidal thoughts in short-term studies.

  • That increase was seen in children, teenagers and young adults.

  • The risk is highest early in treatment and after dose changes.

  • Warning signs include new agitation, panic or severe restlessness.

  • They also include worsening depression or talk of self-harm.

  • Tell a doctor promptly about any of these changes.

  • Ask a family member or friend to watch for them too.

  • Seek help the same day if thoughts of self-harm appear.

  • Depression itself also carries this risk when untreated.

  • Close monitoring, not avoidance of treatment, is the answer.

A note on stopping treatment:

  • Stopping duloxetine abruptly causes discontinuation symptoms.

  • These include dizziness, nausea, headache and irritability.

  • They also include tingling sensations and sleep disturbance.

  • The dose must be reduced gradually under medical supervision.

  • Never run out of supply partway through a course.

Drug Interactions – Avoid or Use With Caution

Never combine Dulane DR with these:

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants.

  • Linezolid, an antibiotic with MAOI activity.

  • Intravenous methylene blue.

  • Another duloxetine product of any brand.

  • Other antidepressants, including SSRIs and other SNRIs.

  • Tricyclic antidepressants and lithium.

  • Triptan migraine medicines.

  • Tramadol, fentanyl and other opioid painkillers.

  • St John’s wort and other serotonergic herbal products.

  • Warfarin and other anticoagulants.

  • Aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers.

  • Clopidogrel and other antiplatelet medicines.

Combinations affecting duloxetine levels:

  • Fluvoxamine and ciprofloxacin, which raise levels markedly.

  • Other strong inhibitors of the CYP1A2 enzyme.

  • Smoking, which lowers duloxetine levels.

  • Alcohol, which adds liver strain and sedation.

  • MAOIs plus duloxetine can cause fatal serotonin syndrome.

  • A 14-day gap is needed after stopping an MAOI.

  • A 5-day gap is needed after stopping duloxetine.

  • Several serotonergic drugs together compound the same risk.

  • Duloxetine plus blood thinners increases bruising and bleeding.

  • Enzyme inhibitors can raise duloxetine levels substantially.

  • Your range includes tramadol-adjacent and sedative products.

  • It also includes dapoxetine, which is itself an SSRI.

  • Combining serotonergic medicines is a real risk here.

  • Cross-link these pages so buyers see the overlap.

Emergency Warning Signs – Seek Urgent Medical Help

Seek help the same day if you or someone else has:

  • Any thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life.

  • Depression that deepens rather than improving.

  • New or worsening anxiety, panic or agitation.

  • Severe restlessness or an inability to sit still.

  • Aggression, impulsiveness or out-of-character behaviour.

  • Racing thoughts with a reduced need for sleep.

  • Agitation with fever, muscle rigidity and a racing pulse.

  • A seizure or convulsion.

  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes with dark urine.

  • Blistering or peeling skin, or sores in the mouth.

  • Severe eye pain with halos and blurred vision.

  • Vomiting blood or passing black stools.

  • Confusion with severe weakness and unsteadiness.

  • Fainting or collapse.

Critical instructions in an emergency:

  • Tell every treating doctor that you take duloxetine.

  • Say it is an SNRI antidepressant.

  • State the strength, the dose and how long you have taken it.

  • Mention any other antidepressant, opioid or triptan.

  • Say whether any dose change happened recently.

  • Do not stop the capsules abruptly without advice.

  • Bring the pack with you if that is possible.

  • Mood changes on an antidepressant are a recognised effect.

  • They are not a personal failing and they can be managed.

  • A doctor can adjust treatment once they know.

  • Local crisis helplines are available if you feel unsafe.
