How it works (mechanism of action)

  • GLP-1 is a hormone released by the gut after eating.

  • It signals the brain and pancreas that food has arrived.

  • Natural GLP-1 breaks down within minutes.

  • Semaglutide is built to resist that breakdown.

  • This is why one injection lasts a whole week.

  • It acts on GLP-1 receptors in the brain.

  • This reduces hunger and increases fullness.

  • People then eat less at each meal.

  • It also slows the stomach emptying of food.

  • Slower emptying prolongs the feeling of fullness.

  • It increases insulin release when blood sugar is high.

  • It lowers glucagon release at the same time.

  • Weight loss follows the reduced energy intake.

  • The same slowing explains the nausea seen early on.

  • It also explains the anaesthesia precaution above.
